Fraud fear not rubbish 7Days - UAE News: Fraud fear not rubbish
This news was brought to you by www.7days.aeSCAVENGERS swarming on bins in Sharjah are pocketing bank details, passport copies and personal information that could be sold on to fraudsters, an expert has warned. The emirates police force and municipality are teaming up with waste management firm Beeah to crack down on rubbish robbers who are pilfering private data from the dumpsters of careless residents.Beeahs confidential document destruction expert, Walid Zabaneh, said the bin-jackers are believed to be illegal immigrants in many cases and could be passing on sensitive information to a third party for a price. He said: We do know that theres a big problem [with identity theft]. Credit card statements, passport copies, bank slips - all these things are thrown away by people at the moment and it can get into the wrong hands.Illegal immigrants are among those who are going through rubbish and they can sell this type of information onwards for money. The garbage hunters will pocket anything from mouldy potatoes to plastic cartons, so paperwork containing personal details is a jackpot for those desperate enough to delve into the stinking cesspits of Sharjah dustbins. And Beeah boss Khalid Al Huraimel said companies that do not take care of their files are also at risk. He added: Waste scavenging is very much a reality in the UAE, with those willing to go through a companys waste, in hopes of uncovering importantinformation.Experts say all paperwork containing personal information, however seemingly insignificant, can open a door to criminals intent on emptying bank accounts, cloning identities and taking cash from credit cards. This article was originally published by www.7days.ae.
